Dowry System - A Social Evil

Indian culture is amongst the world oldest civilisations of the world which begun about 4,500 years ago. India is known for the birthplace for Hinduism and Buddhism. According to CIA and Handbook of Research on Development and Religion, about 80% of our population is identified as Hindu.

Our hindu culture involves a great social sin in it's marriages, Dowry System (Dahej Pratha). A dowry is a property or money, paid by the bride's family to the groom or his family at the time of marriage. The concept behind the initialisation of Dowry system was to help the girl financially after marriage. But during the British rule, laws were made that stated women can't own any property by their name. Which leaves behind an only option for the bride's family to give dowry to the bridegroom's family.

With time the society took this culture to a very bad extent and men started taking advantage of it. Now, it's not a choice of bride's family to decide what and how much is to be given but became a compulsion to give as per man's condition and needs.

The Dowry system has created its worst impact on our society. Women are seen as a liability for the family and are often offered second hand treatment in education, job and many other sectors of life. In some cases, it led to crimes against women from mental abuse, domestic violence to even forced suicides. Parents started looking their son as a source of income, and on the other hand females infanticide took place in large sections of the society to prevent themselves from giving dowry.

We reached our 21st century, but this sin still exists. It came along changing from one form to another. This immoral act has been stopped in some educated societies. The reason behind this is education. But many rural and urban states still has this continuing. You might have heard a famous saying by your parents "Padh lega, aachi nawkri le lega, toh dahej bhi mota milega". Parents force their children to get a job(especially Government Job) so that they can get a good sum of dowry.

Time has bought us to a stage where the marriage depends on the amount of money that will be given. This can be eradicated only by promoting girl's education and creating a social stigma around dowry. Dowry Prohibition Act, Indian law, enacted on May 1,1961 intended to prevent the giving or receiving of a dowry. But the enforcement of the law should be implemented on grounds.

Therefore, the conscience of society needs to be fully awakened to the evils of the dowry system so that the demand for dowry itself should lead to ‘loss of face’ in society for those who demand it.
